Debunking The Law of Attraction

If you’re like most of the people I know, you’re well aware of the law of attraction.

You know, the old what you focus on you get.

Or as Hill said in ‘Think And Grow Rich’, you need a definite purpose backed up with a burning desire to achieve.

Which is all good…

Up until a certain point.

Then the whole concept falls flat on its face.

Let me explain…

You see, I’ve got a different view on the law of attraction; a view all of those Online Abundance Gurus don’t tell you about.

In my humble (yet often correct) opinion, I don’t believe ‘attraction’ is a ‘law’ at all.

So what is a universal law?

Gravity is a law.

If an apple falls from tree it hits the ground every single time. If I jump off the roof of my house I hit the ground and break a leg. So gravity is a ‘law’ right?

Of course it is.

So here’s my take on this…

The concept of Attraction, that you get what you think about the most, is NOT a law but a “Process.”

And that’s GOOD NEWS for all of us!

Because it’s a process that leads to predictable results (although rarely in a straight line).

  • Predictable YES.
  • Inevitable NO!

And this is where the confusion lies.

When ‘The Process of Attraction’ misfires, and this happens more often than not, one of the reasons for failing is because the person shortcut the process… he or she left out the hard parts.

Let me explain.

You see ‘The Process of Attraction’ is made up of 5 main elements, each one important, and each one must be followed for the process to work.

Here are the 5 elements…

  1. Thoughts: Focus ONLY on what you want.
  2. Feelings: Visualise with emotion, feel it.
  3. Behaviours and habits: Must be congruent with your thoughts.
  4. Actions: Can’t just think and grow rich… you’ve got to DO something (money loves motion).
  5. The Attitude of Gratitude: Being grateful for what you’ve got allows more to arrive.

These elements do not work in isolation. It’s a team effort. It’s not like a buffet where you get to choose the chicken and the cheese but leave out the carrots and spinach.

No. These five elements are the meal… and they each must be consumed to get the required result.

In my experience, most folks concentrate on the first two elements; thoughts and feelings. They are the easy ones. The feel good ones. And not much effort is required. So if they want to be rich, they spend all their time thinking they’re rich and feeling rich.

  • They think about being rich in the morning.
  • Think about being rich in the evening.
  • Think about being rich when they go to bed at the end of the day.

But that’s all they do!

So not much happens.

When this occurs, many people get disappointed and bitter.

You can see these tortured souls at seminars, muttering away in the corridor, telling anyone who’ll listen the law of attraction sucks big time. (You can see folks shying away from these poor souls, reluctant to get close to such negative vibes.)

Frankly, it’s sad to see all of their dreams turned to dust.

But it’s no surprise right?

  • They didn’t change their behaviours and habits.
  • Didn’t take action.
  • Didn’t give gratitude each day for what they’ve got.
  • Didn’t grow.
  • And didn’t add value.

Of course nothing was going to change!

Years ago an old mentor of mine took me aside and gave me some great advice. I’ll never forget it. He simply said…

“You make yourself attractive to money
making yourself more valuable.”

It’s that simple.

So what’s this got to do with you?

To get more in life, we have to grow more and make ourselves more valuable. We know this. And the best way I’ve found to get what I want is through the ‘process of attraction’.

My thoughts, feelings, behaviours and actions get aligned and congruent
with my goal and I give plenty of gratitude throughout the process.

It’s then only a matter of time until these thoughts become a reality.

And look, whether you believe it’s a ‘law’ or a ‘process’ really doesn’t matter. I just wanted to give you my take on all this ‘attraction’ stuff. The important thing is to do it and get started and then keep moving toward your end goal.

Gary Halbert was right when he said, “Money loves motion.”

That’s because money is attracted to speed. That’s why I believe meditation is great but motion is even better.

Anyway, I talk more about this subject in this month’s newsletter.

For now, if you’ve got a comment… I’d love to see it below.

P.S. I’ve been told by more enlightened friends, there is another reason why the process of attraction doesn’t always work. They say it’s because of Karma, and if you’re covered in bad Karma the process just won’t work. But that’s out of the scope of this post, and not my specialty. However, I tend to believe it is true. It does make sense right?

I first stumbled across the concept of ‘process’ as opposed to ‘law’ in an old Dan Kennedy course. For me, it was a liberating moment. Why? Because ‘process’ implies a set in stone recipe, like baking a cake. It was then up to me to follow the process and reap the rewards.

This post is mightily attractive to me.

Great work Pete. As always you make me question my values, and nudge me into thinking. Exactly what is required for growth.

Great word the old ‘growth’ hey Louise…

Glad you enjoyed the post… and.. it got you thinking.

This is such a wonderful summary of the Law Of Attraction Pete.
I think you should write a book and you could call it “The Secret of The Secret”.
Haven’t heard ‘money loves motion’ before…very nice….
Thanks for the supercharge into the week!

Big hugs to you

Great idea about the book.

And good to see this got your blood pumping.

As for ‘money loves motion’, it was one of the late Gary Halbert sayings.

First time I heard it I went, “Yes!” That’s what I wanna hear!”

Cheers Pete

First sensible post I have seen on the Law of Attraction yet. I always did have trouble with the word ‘law’ in relation to this Attraction business. Always knew it couldn’t be this easy, just sitting around waiting for your life to change. Could never really swallow the whole yarn.

Good Post Pete.As always telling it like it is.

Pete Godfrey August 13, 2013 at 10:06 am

Thanks for the feedback Bernice…

I find the word process sums it up well for me.

Magic really does happen when you follow the process in my post…

Attraction is a real force… so are thoughts and feelings.

And gratitude is the icing on the cake…

cheers Pete

The real story of The Law of Attraction is in The Master Key System published by Charles F. Haanel way back in 1912. Napoleon Hill subscribed to this course. Haanel used the knowledge he amassed to create his own fortune.
No one can truly dismiss the Law of Attraction, but one should acknowledge that the Law of Physics is our practical reality and the Law of Attraction is one of the laws of metaphysics which is our future and only in the last few centuries are we starting to appreciate these truths.
Those who wish more knowledge of The Master Key System will find a free printable copy is available via Google. It is deeper than Think and Grow Rich but. as it is written as a 24 week course. one needs persistence to absorb it.
It may change your life!

Thanks for sharing this…

And yes, this law, or process of attraction goes way back…

And there are many levels to explore.

This is so relevant in so many respects, regardless of what end goal it is that one is pursuing.

I can’t immediately recall the person responsible for coining the phrase, however it seems to me to be congruent with the “We create and live in our own realities” notion.

Thanks again Pete – great thinking stuff!!

Pete Godfrey August 14, 2013 at 7:43 am

Most definitely Hamish… thoughts have energy and power… it’s a liberating feeling to know you are in the driver’s seat.

Steve Harvey August 13, 2013 at 9:34 pm

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the great post and thanks to Michael Yardley…that made my day ha!

I once worked with a client who was doing all the steps listed in the movie, vision board, affirmations…the lot, but he still wasn’t able to manifest his dream job. He had recently returned to his home country after having worked overseas for 7 years. He was making $150,000 per year but managing to blow $50,000 on nothing. We did some muscle testing with him and we discovered that he had a limiting belief which was sabotaging his efforts. We discovered that his energy system was still programmed to making $100,000, which is exactly how much he had been making before going overseas. So, even though he was being paid more, his actions had to be congruent with his belief. After only three sessions using EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) with him, we were able to clear out the limiting belief and bring his energy system into balance with his goal. Three weeks later, he manifested his dream job at a salary of $203,000 per year…with 50% being paid off-shore to boot!

Yeah great feedback Steve… I’ve seen this many times over the years… people that are great at making money and then they blow it and have to start over again. Fact is, you can never outgrow your self-image, your self-worth. Thanks for sharing this…cheers Pete

The “Law of Attraction ” is the “Law of Distraction ” without ACTION !!!!

Doug April 5, 2015 at 1:24 pm

Thanks Pete for your thoughts on ‘The Law Of Attraction’…

I have to admit after reading L O A about 18 months ago my… confusion with the ‘Law’ aspect, I even thought OK, if I shut myself away and only concentrate on the positive selfish thoughts I am bound to wake up sometime in the future “Rich” (only Joking)!

Clearly your elements are the ingredients to true success

Hey Doug… and yeah, the old ‘think and grow rich’ is a misnomer… at best only a fraction of the success equation.
