Funny you should ask Dallas. I've got something real special coming up in Melbourne on the 2nd and 3rd October called The Boardroom Express... it's a new express coaching group that runs for 4 weeks designed for copywriters, coaches, consultant, internet/info marketers. I will send you a personal invite today in the mail so you can see exactly what I am doing.

The quality of members joining so far is high. Got some top copywriters (of course), a very savvy entreprenuer who retired early, Glazer/Kennedy Marketer of the Year, and a few other cool folks so you'll fit right in. And because there are only 18 spots up for grabs, it's gonna be a very personal and exclusive group.

PS. Your address, still the PO Box in Baulkham Hills?

Hey John, I simply thought back to my past life mate because basically, I was a tradie (without the papers) and had worked along side tradies for many years.

In saying that, as copywriters, our biggest asset is empathy... to truly understand who we are writing to is where the money is hidden.

Great post Pete.

Ya gotta walk a mile in the person your writing to shoes....if you even want to have a hope of persuading them.

How did you go getting back into the 'tradey' mindset for your promotion mate?

Hi Pete :)

Its all to easy to lose touch with our target group.

I love to listen to people as I am out and about. When my tribe of four kids
are at school or daycare, I enjoy the luxury of shopping on occasion.

I love to hang out at one of our cafes, smack in the middle of a large shopping cenrte.
Have a really nice coffee and something healthy to eat (most of the time :)

People are very interesting subjects. You can learn so much by listening (without being rude or obvioius) and watching without staring. You see things and hear about a whole host of topics.

You get the bunch of negatives turning one little comment into a fully fledged King Kong Dinosaur. How bad this is and so on! I tend to not listen to those types as they
are common - who wants to listen to this stuff when we see it everyday on the news?
Sometimes the points are fair and valid, mostly its a bunch of people whinging about how bad so and so is ---- good grief. I mean yes we all bitch at times - sometimes you just don't want to know about it.

I remember my time as a tradie - an apprentice plumber - loved it. My partner and I built up a good size firm with contracts, I was going to Tafe in Studying - we worked out of Newcastle and travelled to a variety of areas.

To cut a story short, in the mid 1990's, my partner drive without a license, leaving me with a business, that no one wanted to know about. I only had 1 year to go and no-one would take me on as an apprentice despite the existing contracts that came with me.
In the end, I made sure our clients were not left in the cold, got their jobs finished and I closed shop - going bankrupt as a result. One of many lessons useful for business and personal growth. The bankruptcy was not the business there were not debts attached. A finance company (my bad first place for taking out loan above my means) could not wait for their funds and the last option I had was bankruptcy.

So 15 years later, another world away, I am happier and a lot more wiser.

By keeping an open mind it is amazing the sources of conversations you can have as you did Pete with the man from Tamworh.

All the best

Hey what a beautiful reminder of the power of the media to influence our market. I'm with you Pete and I see myself as imune to the media freak shows and disaster around every corner. Thanks to you and your stories, I am telling my own and my clients love it. Regards Jeff

Lucky you're not writing for the women's lingerie market, you might have to start wearing some -- just kidding. Great story, you really are the master wizard!

I gotta admit, since being exposed to "Pete's world", I just fill up the car and don't even look at the petrol price. One day the store owner told me he couldn't change $100 -- petrol was at it's weekly peak and he said his petrol pumps that morning were like a ghost town. The small things that happily don't occupy my mind anymore!

Great lessons there Pete. When I first met you 3 years ago in the 'smokers circle', I'd say i was similar to Jeff. My 'thing' was constantly complaining about my crappy job. It only took 2 days with you at your Protege 06 weekend to rid me of that kind of negativity (did wonders for my writing skills too :) - Few months later I left the 'crappy' job. See you at Cash Characters mate.
